Launched in 2014, the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Getaway is the largest ship sailing out of Miami to the Caribbean, year-round. Because it was built for the tropics and hot weather sailing, the ship offers a wonderful connection to the ocean, despite its size. There's no end of entertainment on deck, with five waterslides, a high ropes course and a fireworks display on every cruise from the open-air nightclub, Spice H2O.
Restaurants are clustered along The Waterfront, a quarter of a mile of boulevard with outdoor seating and a chance to sample anything from celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian's exquisite seafood dishes to decadent ice creams from Dolce Gelato.
There's accommodation for all tastes and budgets. We love The Haven, Norwegian Getaway's private suite complex, with butlers, its own pool and sunbathing deck and its own restaurant; this is the perfect solution for anybody who wants the buzz and nightlife of a big ship but peace and quiet to which to escape. This is also a very solo-friendly ship; single travellers can book a Studio, part of a complex with its own lounge.
Entertainment on board includes Burn the Floor, a dazzling Latin dance show; The Grammy Experience, featuring live jazz and R&B; a full production of the musical, Legally Blonde; a comedy club; and the Illusionarium, where top magicians perform mind-boggling feats while you dine. Or simply hit Norwegian Getaway's bars; the Ice Bar is an experience not to be missed (with cocktails served in glasses of ice at sub-zero temperatures), while there's a Mojito Bar, a traditional Irish pub and Spice H2O, an outdoor, Ibiza-inspired adults-only lounge and bar, and Bliss Ultra Lounge, the cruise line's popular nightclub.
