Le Lyrial

Luxury Cruises with Ponant

Brand new Le Lyrial was launched in October 2015, a sister to Le Soleal, Le Boreal and L'Austral but with a few refinements. Carrying just 244 passengers, fewer than the other ships as it has more suites, the decor of this elegant, French-designed vessel is in shades of blue, inspired by the translucent polar ice and the aquamarine of the Mediterranean. The ship will sail in both warm and cold climates, spending its maiden season exploring Croatia and Greece before heading south to Antarctica; with an ice-strengthened hull, it is perfectly suited to expedition cruising.

Lifestyle on board is casual and relaxed but with an element of French chic; there's no formal dress code but people do dress smartly for dinner, so bring a cocktail dress for those balmy Mediterranean nights. There's a theatre for talks, films and shows, a spa run by Parisian brand Sothys, a gym, library and internet centre.

One whole deck is dedicated to the top suites, including the lavish Owner's Suite, which has a huge balcony and wonderful entertaining space. All but eight cabins have private balcony and even those with picture windows are visions of beauty, with restful white, silver and blue tones and luxurious fittings.

Dining on board Le Lyrialis in two locations. Dinners are taken in the main restaurant, simply called Restaurant Gastronomique, while there's an informal buffet on Deck Six which turns into a grill at night, with romantic outdoor seating overlooking the pool (book early for this). After dark, when the ship is sailing in warm climates, there's no better spot than the Open Air Bar on the top deck for music, cocktails and dancing under the stars.
