P&O Cruises' brand-new, 3,600-passenger Britannia really is a giant leap forward for this popular British cruise line. The ship, which will sail all over Europe from Southampton, is all about cool, stylish interiors, beautiful fittings and above everything else, food.

Britannia's line-up of big-name chefs is unrivalled at sea. James Martin will offer classes in the Cookery Club. Master patissier Eric Lanlard is in charge of the Market Cafe, bursting with delicious patisserie, cheeses, antipasti and tapas. Michelin-starred Atul Kochhar oversees Sindhu, a modern Indian restaurant that has seen great success on other P&O Cruises ships, while wine expert Olly Smith is behind The Glasshouse, with a huge range of wines by the class, matched to the food that's served there.

Some of the dishes in the three main restaurants will be created by Marco Pierre White. The Meridian and the Peninsular offer Freedom Dining (which means you turn up when you like) and the Oriental is for those who prefer the tradition of assigned seating.

Britannia offers an array of bars, from the comfortable Crow's Nest, with sweeping views of the horizon, to the chic Blue Bar, with an impressive cocktail list. Evenings should also include a visit to The Limelight Club, a traditional supper club; and the theatre, where dazzling shows will take place against a high-tech digital backdrop. For the many ballroom dancers the line attracts, the gorgeous Crystal Room has a large dance floor under a glittering chandelier.

There are four pools, one for adults only, and extensive children's facilities; this is the first P&O ship on which teens have their own deck space. A large spa and gym also provide opportunities for wellness and pampering.

All outside cabins have balconies and there are 27 single cabins, some also with balcony. Colours are contemporary; cream, olive and gold, with big, flat-screen TVs, luxurious amenities from The White Company and movies on demand.
