On Lanzarote’s quieter southern shore, just one kilometre from the picturesque fishing village of Playa Blanca you will find the unique charms of the Gran Melia Volcan. Drawing inspiration from the traditional villages in the south of the island, the architect has designed a delightful hotel that fulfils the promise made by the spectacular church-style entrance, with romantic squares, patios and fountains hidden amongst a series of small buildings that blend in perfectly with the surrounding countryside.
From certain vantage points, it seems as if the ‘village’ stands in the shadow of a volcano, but this is in fact a witty architectural detail marking the heart of the resort where reception, bars, shops and lounges are located.
Part of the undoubted attraction of the hotel’s location is the wonderful views of the islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos, which can be enjoyed from the pool terraces and gardens and many of the hotel rooms. In addition some rooms also offer views o the Papagayo beaches and the new Marina Rubicón, which hosts an assortment of bars, restaurants and shops. The lagoon pool itself is particularly appealing, and it is here, on raised decking extending out over the water, that buffet breakfast and dinner is served in the Restaurante La Florida. Seafood, as well as French, Italian, and of course, Spanish fare is also on the menu. |
