Looking out to sea from Ornos Bay is this absolute gem of an hotel. Though the collection of flat-roofed whitewashed buildings clustered together on a slope overlooking the bay exhibits every trademark of traditional Aegean architecture, this Small Luxury Hotel is achingly fashionable.
The compact interior is a blank canvas of pure white walls and marble floors, where design elements and contemporary pieces from the 21st-century co-exist with antiques and works of art from the 17th and 18th centuries in an inspired and eclectic mix.
In the typically tiered manner of Cycladic building, the 45 guest rooms and suites are constructed in banks overlooking the sea or gardens, with paths that wind their way down through the leafy landscaped grounds to the freshwater pool and Jacuzzi, and then on further, to the main pool. The main pool, just above sea level has a swim-up bar, and a lunch restaurant with shaded patio areas and a sun drenched terrace with loungers and hammocks. With the small private pebble beach just below, this area positively invites sloth, though if you did feel inclined to stir yourself there is a good range of water sports available.
As the sun sets on another glorious day in the Aegean the night is yet young - after dinner in the excellent gourmet restaurant, party till dawn in nearby Mykonos town. |
