Intimacy is the keynote at this Grenadian hotel, where English owner Leo Garbutt and general manager Clive Barnes have created a warm and friendly ambience that the many repeat guests find simply irresistible.
It is the thoughtful touches that become addictive - waking up to the aroma of freshly-ground coffee whilst your maid lays out an à ¬a carte breakfast on your balcony; partaking of the fresh fruit on the beach in the morning or the traditional afternoon teas on the lawn; indulging in the complimentary canapé³ delivered to your room as you prepare for dinner. And what a dinner to prepare for! Following a five year association with the hotel, Gary Rhodes opens a new Rhodes Restaurant at the Calabash in January 2004, introducing a 'taste of Grenada' to a 'touch of Rhodes', his popular Smoked Haddock with Welsh Rarebit Topping has been given a Caribbean twist in the shape of a King Fish, for example, while the Steak and Kidney Pie has metamorphosed into a poached fillet of beef served with a puff pastry kidney tartlet and deep fried Callaboo.
The Rhodes restaurant is at the heart of a horseshoe arrangement of two-storey buildings, encircling the lawn and comprising 30 Sea Facing Suites. Whirlpool Suites are luxurious, while Superior Suites offer additional space, Pool Suites have a private plunge pool and the Thorneycroft Suite is perfect for couples who really wish to spoil themselves.
Luxuriate beside the large swimming pool, or sample some nonmotorised water sports and scuba diving. The layout of the hotel echoes its location, set in a crescent cove complemented by a white sand beach. Tennis courts provide an alternative distraction, while pampering can be enjoyed at the reflexology and aromatherapy centre.
Evenings offer the opportunity to socialise with the other guests at the manager's weekly cocktail party, at the pool or beach bars or tap your foot to the sounds of live music. However you choose to unwind, you cannot fail to be charmed by the unobtrusive and gracious nature of this hotel, which fondly ranks amongst our favourites.
The Thorneycroft Suite
The Thorneycroft Suite is an extravagantly spacious one bedroom suite with an extensive open-plan living and dining room leading out onto the sundeck. The elegant four poster bed invites romance, as does the marble bathroom comprising a double shower with body jets and double whirlpool bath. A large plunge pool is situated on the sundeck and there is also a kitchen for the use of your maid. Should you wish to accommodate your family, there is a spiral staircase, which connects the Thorneycroft Suite with the one bedroom Calabash Suite below. |
