The Marine

Hermanus

On the cliff edge overlooking Walker Bay, The Marine, built in 1902, has been part of South African hospitality for many years. Now owned by Liz McGrath, it joins the exulted ranks of her other two hotels, The Cellars-Hohenort and The Plettenberg. A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group of hotels, The Marine is now the last word in luxury and refinement.

Your accommodation comprises 45 beautiful bedrooms and suites, many with commanding sea views revealing the type of scene dreams are made of. Each is embellished with modern fabrics and colours giving a real sense of escape and the marble and chrome bathrooms provide the perfect recipe for relaxation surrounded by fresh, fragrant bubbles.

There can be little or lots to do here, depending on your desires. Take a gentle stroll along the cliffhugging path and admire the miles of white sandy beach beyond, or catch some African sun relaxing by the sparkling heated courtyard pool. While away the day at The Orangery with a glass of champagne or afternoon tea and unwind after a busy day’s whale watching in the adjoining Reading Room – a quiet place for contemplation or the planning of your onward journey.

There are two fabulous restaurants at The Marine. The Pavilion has stunning sea views through to Walker Bay, serves traditional fare and is open for breakfast and dinner. Whilst The Marine, open for lunch and dinner, has an open plan and contemporary feel serving some of the finest fresh fish to be found in the country.

The town of Hermanus, just over an hour from Cape Town, started life as a fishing village and has grown around its fame as one of the foremost areas for land based whale watching in the world. The Southern Right Whales begin to arrive early July and stay through until the end of November, and viewing can be enjoyed from the coastal paths, the rocks of the shoreline, or the comfort of your sumptuous bedroom!
