Word of mouth has travelled fast about Eden Rock, which, having been sympathetically refurbished, is now one of the most talked about hotels on St Barths.
Its setting is unmatched on the island, built on a stone promontory jutting into the bay of St Jean. As Conde Nast Traveller Magazine comments; "To sleep in these rooms is like sleeping in a painting hung outdoors, suspended from the sky over the sea, with that added crucial pleasure for sea addicts of having the sound of waves as background music for your dreams".
Eden Rock has a distinctively English feel, a kind of tropical country house, and is presided over by an English couple, David and Jane Matthews. It's small and intimate, comprising only sixteen individually decorated and furnished rooms including the Greta Garbo Suite, once used by the actress herself as her Caribbean hideaway. A traditional richness pervades the whole hotel with antique furniture and oil paintings, intriguing corners, alcoves and deeply cushioned settees, all blending easily with an informal and enthusiastic service provided by a young and good-humoured staff. The homely look has been promoted even more due to some items of furniture having been supplied from the Matthew's own eighteenth century house in Yorkshire!
The reputation of the two restaurants and tapas bar attracts many outsiders who come to enjoy the fine cuisine prepared by the chef, Jean Claude Dufour and his team. Each restaurant has its own charming ambience from the gastronomic restaurant high on the rock to the Sand Bar where one can eat fresh fish, seafood and salads, with your feet in the sand.
And for day to day lazing, Eden Rock is one of the few hotels on St Barths to offer a lovely sandy beach together with ideal swimming conditions in its own very private pocket of the Caribbean sea. |
