Villa San Michele

Florence

Nestling in the verdant hills above the city of Florence lies the Villa San Michele. None other than Michelangelo designed its colonnaded façade, and the now superbly modernised villa retains many reminders of its monastic origins, from the telephone booth that was once a confessional to the triptych in the lounge.

Dining alfresco in the Loggia, with its mesmerising views over Florence, is surely one of life’s great experiences. Guests may also dine in the vaulted elegance of the Cloister Restaurant or in the Cenacolo, refectory of the ancient monastery, with its magnificently restored fresco of The Last Supper. Within the hotel grounds, which mix woodland with classical Italian landscaped gardens, one may relax by the heated outdoor pool or work off any indulgences in the exercise room. Hidden away in a secluded corner of the park is the old Chapel, favoured haunt of honeymooners and just one more aspect of the Villa San Michele’s uniquely romantic appeal.

Of course, no visit would be complete without a chauffeur-driven drive into Florence itself, to gaze on the wonders of the Uffizi, Duomo and Ponte Vecchio and to stroll along the Via dei Calzaiuoli, catwalk for the Florentine passeggiata. A renaissance of spirit in the Renaissance city.
