On the banks of the Arno in the peace and quiet of the Tuscan countryside two miles east of Florence, lies the Villa La Massa. Built in the 16th-century and transformed into a luxury hotel in 1948, the villa is a splendid property with a fascinating history. Condé Nast Traveller describes it as ‘a miniature estate of exquisite character’.
In fact this former aristocratic home comprises three different villas; the smallest has five rooms, while the oldest part of the property also houses the elegant vaulted restaurant, Il Verrocchio.
Excellent food and the high standard of friendly professional service ensure that every meal is one to be savoured. In summer, the terrace overlooking the Arno is a delightful venue for dining.
The majority of the 37 guest rooms are in the main villa, an impressive building with a stately air, the arches and columns of the magnificent Medician Hall lobby/lounge adding to its resplendence.
The style throughout is traditional Tuscan. Rooms are furnished with antiques and decorated in glorious Como silks in gold, blues and crimsons, a hallmark of the hotel. The outdoor pool is set in pretty, leafy surroundings in the hotel grounds, while horse riding, tennis and golf are all available locally, outside the hotel, leaving you free to enjoy the tranquillity of the Villa La Massa undisturbed. |
