Villa Nova

Barbados

If walls could talk, Villa Nova would have much to recount. Formerly a Plantation house, a doctor's surgery and a government owned residence, this stately piece of Barbados' history is steeped in charm, elegance and character, distilled through the centuries.

Built in 1834 on the site of the old Great House, Villa Nova later became home to the Earl and Countess of Avon, former British Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden and his wife Clarissa. Distinguished guests have included Sir Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth II.

Set 900 feet above sea level in 15 acres of landscaped gardens and tropical rainforest, the house commands views across sugar cane plantations and rolling valleys to the Atlantic coast. The secluded setting is complemented by the intimacy of just 28 suites, individually styled by Nina Campbell; wooden floors and high ceilings recapture the character of the original house and the elegant décor exudes old-style charm. Antiques and Victorian claw foot baths blend with modern luxuries, while the premier suites - Churchill, Eden and Haynes, offer exceptional space and comfort.

Dine in the open-air Terrace Restaurant, whose gourmet delights are sought after island-wide, or take a picnic to the beach, just ten minutes away. The service at Villa Nova is outstanding, from unpacking your bags and anticipating your needs, to fresh flowers and remembering your usual drink at the bar.

The grounds’ centrepiece is the bottle-green mosaic swimming pool flanked by royal palms, mahogany and bearded fig trees. Elsewhere, discover tennis courts, a music lounge and fully-equipped gym; a spa, Te @ Villa Nova, will open in Spring 2004.
