Built as a home by the shipping magnate Sir Edward Cunard, the colonial-style Great House now forms the heart of this welcoming hotel. Beyond its doors, a wonderful expanse of hibiscus and fountainfilled gardens – 19 acres in all – unfold to a half-mile of white sands and the azure waters of Glitter Bay itself.
This gracious hotel is an excellent choice for families. The comfortable rooms are housed in Andalusian-style stucco villas, with several spacious one and two bedroom suites. Tucked at one end of the beach is the Beach House, a charming stone villa with a colonnaded verandah. When you’re not swimming from the half-mile of sandy beach or taking a dip in the freshwater pool, try your hand at the complimentary water sports, take a tennis lesson with the resident pro or head to the fitness centre. If a game of golf appeals, rounds can be arranged at nearby Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland. Younger guests, meanwhile, will be entertained for hours at the dedicated play centre. Set apart from the main building, it has a toddlers’ pool, play area and the Tulleys Children’s Club, offering a fun selection of supervised activities.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be served on your own private terrace or balcony (the hotel offers 24hr room service), or you may prefer to soak up the sea views from the beachfront Piperade restaurant. A weekly show provides the chance to enjoy some local music and perhaps even a dance to the Bajan beat.
Beach House
For those seeking an extra degree of privacy and intimacy, we thoroughly recommend the accommodation in the Beach House, set upon the oceanfront, surrounded by lush tropical gardens. This lovely cloistered palazzo, originally built in the 1930s by Cunard as a diminutive replica of his family’s Venetian palazzo, is set apart from the rest of the resort, overlooking a lily pond and the beach.
The Five Individually- Designed Suites
Sir Edward Suite, Marquis Suite, Clarence Suite, Venetian Room and Lady Emerald Room all enjoy luxurious marble bathrooms and private terraces or balconies. Particularly spacious is the Marquis Suite, featuring a unique semi-covered sitting area that unfolds out into an extensive open-air balcony. The Sir Edward Suite hosts an extensive sitting area with kitchenette, and a dressing area opening onto the balcony, which commands ocean views. |
